# Advanced Settings Breakdown

### Message Grouping

Grouping allows reminders for multiple appointments to be sent in a single message. Reminders can be grouped in one of two ways: appointment-based grouping or contact-based grouping. The method used for grouping messages is set for each rule in use via a dropdown menu selection.

Check out our How to Use Message Grouping guide for details on how to take advantage of this feature.

### Message Throttle

Message throttle will be used to reduce the speed at which your messages are delivered. This is good for situations where you may have your calls routed to a live operator and allows them time to address their needs. If the throttle is active, consider that this will slow down the task of following up on the outreach for your messages configured within the notification plan.

### Outbound caller ID

If this is set to Default, the rule will use the number in Appointment Locations and if that number is also set to Default, it will default to the main number on the account. If the caller ID is set here, this will supersede and be the caller ID used for this Rule. A valid number is needed to send phone calls, thus all the defaults.

### Text Number

The text number is the number used for text responses. The same hierarchy applies to this as the Outbound Caller ID above.

### Enable Dynamic Call Detection

This function allows your calls to dynamically change if the call is answered by a live person, or if the message sent is leaving a voicemail. An example is a message prompting the caller to respond by pressing a touch-tone. This setting allows us to change that message to not ask for a touch-tone response on a voicemail, for instance.

### Allow appointments that occurred in the past to be sent

![image](media://4eea45a1-1f8d-479b-9655-f9c32f2249f0)

If you are sending surveys or processing a blast message of some kind with appointments that have happened in the past, this acts as a bypass giving permission to overlook that there isn’t an appointment scheduled for the present day.

### Restart message in answering machine mode if the first menu prompt does not receive a response

You generally want to keep this active as a fallback if the system falsely detects a live person has picked up the phone. This can happen if the person pauses before saying hello. If there is no response, the system will restart the message in answering machine mode to deliver the message in full without the confirmation capabilities. Enabling this along with Dynamic Call Detection is considered best practice.

### Next Outbound Rule

If you use all available options in the notification plan for this rule, you can set up a follow-up to the rule to process another sequence of operations that may contain unique scripting. This is most commonly used in following up with a different message such as *“We tried to reach you to notify you about …” *
